The Gao Brothers, Zhen and Qiang, approach arts as a means of political expression. The likeness of Mao is a recurring image in their iconography. It stems from the trauma they experienced as children growing up during Mao’s regime. Today, the Gao Brothers have reached international acclaim. A retrospective of their work, “Gao Brothers: Grandeur and Catharsis” was organized by the Kemper Museum.
